Chudleigh Platinum Jubilee Celebrations
As I am sure you are all well aware, the Queen is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this year with special celebrations over the 4 day period in June – June 2nd – June 5th. Obviously, Chudleigh will want to be part of these celebrations and to that end a steering committee has been set up to organise events in Chudleigh.
It is early days but a number of events have been pencilled in. On the evening of Saturday June 4th, we propose to hold a street party. There will be a road closure in Fore St. and there will be entertainment put on, with lots of different food outlets available. On Sunday June 5th we propose to hold a “Picnic In The Park” This will be held at the Sports Centre. We see this as very much a family event and there will be (hopefully) lots of events going on for the children as well as a Licensed Bar and Food Outlets.
We also hope to hold a small Exhibition with photographs of Chudleigh from 1952 to the present. There are other ideas we are working on, which will be announced at a later date.
The Town Council will be purchasing new bunting and Union flags which will be flown throughout the Jubilee period. The bunting will remain in place for ChudFest in July.
These events will not be able to take place without us recruiting a number of volunteers to help with marshalling on the Saturday night and helping to set up the Sports Centre on the Sunday. The Council will be placing new benches at Milestone Cross and Heathfield Lake Hill, replacing two predecessors that were past their useful life. These benches will bear plaques commemorating the Jubilee. The Council is also exploring the options for tree planting within the parish. Whilst this has been inspired by the Jubilee it is rather unlikely that any planting will take place at that time. This is because mid-summer is just about the worst time to plant trees so we will be looking at an autumn or early winter planting.
